Condition of Road Network

How Do We Check the Condition of Our Roads?

The Town of Kingsville scans our entire road network every three to five years to assess the condition of all hard-surfaced roadways. We collect this data with a Street Scan vehicle that uses sensors capable of capturing and recording all road distress. We receive a ranking of all roads based on their condition.

How Do We Pick the Roads We'll Resurface?

We consider the Street Scan ranking when determining which roads to schedule for resurfacing. See the interactive map of all our hard-surfaced roads below, showing the most recent categorization.

Roads shaded green are generally in good condition and do not require major rehabilitation. Roads shaded red are experiencing distress, which may include cracking or potholes.

Additional Factors When Prioritizing Road Rehabilitation Projects

These factors include the amount of daily traffic the road serves, the condition of the underground infrastructure, and the roadway's speed. For example, if an arterial road and a local subdivision road have the same condition rating, we prioritize the arterial road because:

  • It serves larger traffic volumes
  • Speeds on arterial roads are typically higher than in local subdivisions

Local subdivision roads shaded in red on the map may be delayed in resurfacing if they are still functional. For example, the road may be experiencing significant cracking. However, if this cracking isn’t affecting the road's functionality or causing a bumpy ride, resurfacing will be delayed to ensure efficient spending of Town dollars.

Five-Year Resurfacing Plan

We have a five-year schedule for road resurfacing projects. This schedule is developed using Street Scan data and the additional factors mentioned above. We stick to this schedule as best we can; however, resurfacing projects are sometimes deferred. Budget constraints are one reason we may need to postpone a resurfacing project.
