Flood warnings and what they mean
- Make sure your basement is waterproofed, and your sump pump is working. Install a battery-operated backup, or have a generator in case of power failure
- Clear gutters and drains. Move furniture, valuables and important documents to a safe place
- Consider procuring an engineer to discuss options to protect your home
The Town provides free sand and sandbags to residents in flood-affected areas. There is a limit of 100 bags per household. Call the Municipal Office at 519-733-2305 to schedule a drop-off. The filling station is at Cedar Beach on Heritage Road just west of the McCain Side Road. You must fill your own sandbags using your own equipment.
- Here are a couple of good sandbag filling and installation resources that may help you in the planning and construction of your wall.

It’s up to you to protect yourself and your loved ones. In an emergency, calls are prioritized by severity, and assistance may be delayed or unavailable. If you choose to ignore the evacuation recommendation, emergency services may not be able to reach you in time.
If you or a loved one has mobility impairment or special medical needs, your emergency plan should take extra time or special requirements into account.
We also encourage relatives, friends and neighbours of elderly or vulnerable residents to ensure they are receiving information, prepared for an evacuation, and assisted in evacuating in the event of flooding.
There is a heightened risk of electrical shock when water makes contact with electrical systems that could seriously injure or kill you. When flooding has occurred:
Do not enter your basement if you know or suspect water has risen above the level of electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, furnace, power cords, or is near your electrical panel. Electricity can pass through water or wet flooring, causing an electrical shock.
If flood water is approaching outlets, baseboard heaters, your furnace, power cords, or the electrical panel, contact a licensed electrician or your local electric utility immediately and arrange for them to disconnect power to your home. Watch for downed power lines in flooded areas. If you see one, stay out of the water, at least ten meters back, and call 911.
For your safety, Enbridge Gas will shut off a customer’s natural gas supply in affected areas where gas meters can be safely accessed. Workers do not need to enter homes or businesses to do this. If you smell natural gas or detect other signs of a gas leak, please take the following steps:
- Prevent sources of ignition. Do not touch electrical switches, light candles, or use a landline phone
- Exit the building immediately
- From a safe area, call 1-877-969-0999 or 911. Do not re-enter the building until it is inspected. Do not relight appliances
