Emergency Planning
The Town of Kingsville complies with the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. A copy of the municipal Emergency Response Plan can be obtained by request to the Community Emergency Management Coordinator.
You can prepare for an emergency by creating a 72 hour kit for your family.
Visit the Get Prepared and the Emergency Management Ontario websites for more information.
You can receive important emergency information by signing up for the Kingsville Alert System.
Flood Planning
If you live in a flood impacted area, you must plan ahead. The Town monitors levels regarding the potential for flooding due to high water levels on Lake Erie and Cedar Creek. If the Town issues an evacuation order for your area you should know:
- Where you will stay
- What you will bring with you
- Where you will park your car
- What you will do with your pets
Draft Shoreline Natural Hazard Mapping Available Online
The County of Essex and the Essex Region Conservation Authority have released a draft of their shoreline natural hazard mapping for Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie. The goal is to ensure safe development and help shoreline property owners prepare for emergencies. You can find more information about this mapping on the County's Shoreline Natural Hazard Mapping Update page.
Flood warnings and what they mean |
Essex Region Conservation Authority is the recognized authority for watershed information updates. They have developed a series of escalating precautionary public messages to advise of potential or imminent flooding conditions.
Watershed Conditions/Safety Bulletin: Factors could be dangerous, but flooding is not expected. Flood Outlook: Early notice of flooding potential based on weather forecasts. Flood Watch: Potential for flooding within specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities, EMS and landowners in flood-prone areas should be prepared. Flood Warning: Flooding is imminent or is occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Check the current Flood Warning Status, or find information about ERCA’s High Level Water Information and Flood Mapping. |
Prepare your property |

Sandbags |
The Town provides free sand and sandbags to residents in flood affected areas. There is a limit of 100 bags per household. Call the Municipal Office at 519-733-2305 to schedule a drop-off. The filling station is at Cedar Beach on Heritage Road just west of the McCain Side Road. You must fill your own sandbags using your own equipment. |
72 hour emergency kit |
No two households are the same. Evaluate your family’s unique needs and assemble an emergency survival kit with the supplies needed to stay safe for at least three days. Be mindful of the special needs of everyone in your home. |

In the event of an evacuation |
It’s up to you to protect yourself and your loved ones. In an emergency, calls are prioritized and assistance may be delayed or unavailable. If you choose to ignore the evacuation recommendation, emergency services may not be able to get to you in a timely fashion. If you or a loved one has mobility impairment or special medical needs, your emergency plan should take extra time or special requirements into account. We also encourage relatives, friends and neighbours of elderly or vulnerable residents to ensure they are receiving information, prepared for an evacuation, and receiving assistance to evacuate in the event of flooding. |
Electrical and Natural Gas |
There is a heightened risk of electrical shock when water makes contact with electrical systems that could seriously injure or kill you. When flooding has occurred: Do not enter your basement if you know or suspect water has risen above the level of electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, furnace, power cords, or is near your electrical panel. Electricity can move through water or wet flooring and cause electrical shock. In the event that flood water is approaching outlets, baseboard heaters, your furnace, covers power cords, or is near the electrical panel, contact a licensed electrician or your local electric utility immediately and arrange for them to disconnect power to your home. Watch for downed power lines in flooded areas. If you see one, stay out of the water and back at least 10 meters and call 911. For your safety, Enbridge Gas will shut off a customer’s natural gas supply in affected areas where gas meters can be safely accessed. Workers do not need to enter homes or businesses to do this. If you smell natural gas or detect other signs of a gas leak, please take the following steps:
