A camp fire burns at night

The Town of Kingsville offers burn permits for controlled open air burning for residents. Permits are required for all burning.

Who can apply for a burn permit?

Only property owners can apply for a burn permit. A tenant, worker, or family member wishing to apply for a burn permit must have the owner call the fire administration office.

You can apply for a burn permit online. If you do not have an email address, you can contact the Fire Administration Office by calling 519-733-2314.

What is a Residential Burn Permit?

A residential burn permit is an annual permit that meets the following;

  • The site of the fire is on non-combustible material,
  • The fire is at least 3 metres (9.9 feet) from any flammable material,
  • The space above the fire is at least 3 metres (9.9 feet) from vegetation,
  • The fire is at least 4.75 metres (15 feet) from the property line,
  • The fire is at least 4.75 metres (15 feet) from a structure, and,
  • The flame length does not exceed 1 metre (3.3 feet) in height and 1 metre (3.3 feet) in diameter.

What is a Contractor / Agricultural Burn Permit?

A contractor / agricultural permit is an annual permit that meets the following;

Ensure that any Contractor/Agricultural Fire set out shall not be within a distance of 10 metres of any Building or within 10 metres of any other combustibles, vehicular roadway of any kind or nature, overhead wiring or property lines.

What is a Single Event Burn Permit?

A single event permit is a onetime permit predominately for contractor / agricultural burns that do not require an annual permit based on the location and or materials requested. It must meet the following;

Ensure that any Single Event Fire set out shall not be within a distance of 10 metres of any Building or within 10 metres of any other combustibles, vehicular roadway of any kind or nature, overhead wiring or property lines.

What happens when someone makes a burn complaint?

Guidelines for all burning are included on your burn permit.

When Kingsville Fire & Rescue responds to complaints about burning and they find you are not following these rules, you may be charged for the services used to respond to the complaint, including trucks and staff costs.

We also have the right to revoke your burn permit, if necessary.

Be a good neighbour and make sure that smoke from your burn is not drifting on to others' property. Your neighbours have a right to complain about your burn if the smoke is causing an issue on their property.

If you need to file a burn complaint, please dial 9-1-1 to reach our dispatch and it will be addressed accordingly.

What is the burn by-law?

Kingsville regulates the setting of Open Air Fires through By-law 57-2019.
