About the Kingsville Active Transportation Committee:
The Kingsville Active Transportation Committee is engaged in and committed to improving the quality of life by identifying biking and walking routes throughout Kingsville, Cottam & Ruthven and by encouraging everyone to participate in physical activity using this network of safe and accessible recreation trails, roadways and pathways. Formed in 2008, the committee members include Councillor Tamara Stomp , Councillor Ron Colasanti, Thomas Neufeld (Chair), Sue Omstead, Tom Omstead, Derek Bilokraly, Courtney Affleck (Student Rep) and Ryan Sleiman (Student Rep). The committee is supported by the Parks & Recreation department, Municipal Services and the Town Planner.
Town Council is committed to supporting active transportation services and facilities in Kingsville. In 2009, the Committee used the budget allocation of approximately$28,000 towards installing Share the Road signage and painting edgelines on certain roads on the identified biking routes. A painting machine was purchased to do the edgelining. In 2010, the Committee has divided the budget allocation of $20,000 into three main areas of interest; 1. Master Plan Implementation ($13,000), including the Elizabeth Dr. Walking Trail, 2. Installing Bike Racks ($5,000) and 3. Promotion & Education ($2,000).
The Kingsville Bicycle Routes Brochure includes the 2010 Master Active Transportation Map and has tips for motorists and cyclists about safe sharing of the road. The brochure is disseminated to the public and can be found online and a hard copy at local businesses and municipal offices.
Signage & Lines:
The municipality and the County of Essex have installed "Share the Road" signage along major routes and roadways. In addition, white edgelines have been painted to indicate a safe zone for bicycles to travel. These edgelines are not exclusive and therefore cars are able to park on the side of the road, when otherwise permitted. Share the road and share the responsibility of making your bike trip a safe one!
Kingsville is actively planning more routes and pathways that connect tourist attractions, the local business centre and parks. Have a picnic at Lakeside Park, taste some award winning wines or visit our many other venues. Many of these destinations are within 1.6km of the downtown centre and can be accessed by one of our many safe cycling routes. Cyclists can also visit Cottam and Ruthven, proud communities within the Town of Kingsville.
After you tour the town, there is much more to explore! Kingsville is connected to the ERCA Chrysler Greenway and is also a central starting point of many popular biking destinations, including Point Pelee National Park and Pelee Island.
