Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers, Inc.
Crime Stoppers is basically an investigative tool, relying equally on the co-operation of all police services, the news media and the community. It is a program designed to encourage people to call the 258-TIPS line with information about crimes already committed, or those about to occur. Crime Stoppers offers both total anonymity to the caller and a cash reward if the information is proven to be useful. The anonymity is upheld by the Coordinators who, upon receiving information from a caller over a special private line (in our case, 258-TIPS or 1-800-222-8477) assign the caller a code number known only to that caller and the Coordinators. No caller ever need identify themselves, other than by a code number. Informants never testify in court, nor is their identity ever known. Depending on the weight of the information divulged, rewards run as low as $50 and as high as $1,000.p>
